Living Lab
WILSON’s living lab is located in Zaragoza (Aragon) in a 15-year-old advanced business park. This park is home to CIRCE’s labs and a main building designed as a living lab for testing both grid-connected and isolated renewable energy grids at national level, which makes possible the integration and testing of distributed
resources such as PV generation, storage, and EV charging facilities. Main focus of this living lab will be to transform CIRCE’s building and the overall business park into a source of optimal data management.
Use Case
CIRCE’s living lab will serve as test bench for integration and testing of WILSON solutions prior to large-scale demonstration at TRL7-8. Therefore, all innovations deployed by the technical partners in WILSON are expected to be tested in this living lab to validate their functionality and solve potential integration issues that may arise.

Italy
Located in Brescia, this pilot project involves significant renovations of a 39,000 m² area in the city center, known as “ex-caserma Papa,” owned by Agenzia del Demanio (ADD). The site includes both new constructions and renovations to enhance efficiency and utility for commercial offices and residential buildings. Key upgrades are: a) Transforming the area into the “Cittadella dei Servizi” for Public Administrations; b) Refurbishing the headquarters, canteen, and warehouse; c) Building new
administrative facilities; d) Adding cycle paths, sidewalks, and public parking. Specific allocations include the Italian finance agency, custom guard, and the road-user agency. The complex will connect to the city’s district heating and cooling, aiming to produce around 120,000 kW annually via renewable energy systems (mainly PV), and utilizes BIM and Digital Twin technologies for design and exploration in the WILSON project.

Spain
The Hospital del Mar is a contemporary medical facility that provides treatment for medium to high-complexity medical conditions. It is a well-established hospital with a strong history of serving the city of Barcelona, having developed and expanded alongside the city itself (Ciutat Vella and Sant Martí districts).
The pilot in Hospital del Mar covers almost 40,000 m2 across two large buildings:
- Building 1, completed in 2017, includes the Emergencies, Day Hospital, Obstetrics and Gynecology Surgery, Administrative area, and Data Centre in 15,870 m2.
- Building 2, to be completed in June 2024, will provide 22,500 m2 of space, six hospital floors, 75 beds, four operating theatres, and an ICU for 18 critical patients.

United Kingdom
Newcastle Helix is a pioneering innovation district in Newcastle upon Tyne, UK. With a total of 97,000 square meters, it is a vibrant ecosystem for research, business and living developed by Newcastle University in partnership with Newcastle City Council. Newcastle Helix is a real-world testbed for experimentation and implementation of new ideas, technologies, and urban solutions, making it an ideal demo site for WILSON. Helix site houses buildings like the Urban Sciences Building, an intelligent building
with more than 1,000 sensors integrated into its structure and gathering data citywide. Urban Science Building serves as a living laboratory where researchers investigate how to re-engineer the urban landscape to transform Newcastle into a global model of a sustainable city. Helix is revolutionising how cities will look, behave, and interact within their environment by providing an evidence base to be used by city planners and future developers.

Switzerland
The Swiss demonstrator is situated in the northeastern region of Switzerland, encompassing the service area of SAK, which includes St. Gallen, Appenzell-Innerrhoden, and Appenzell-Ausserrhoden. It represents the situation of a typical rural area in Switzerland. SAK, a DSO and electricity supplier, covers more than 80,000 households and industrial premises, covering applications from energy monitoring to occupants and health, well-being and accessibility/ambient assisted living. The Uzwil building park, in which SAK owns and operates the entire energy system, will be
connected to the SINA data space and seamlessly integrated into the trial. This core demo site features 21 apartments, showcasing the innovative features and capabilities of the building park. Furthermore, additional buildings are being integrated by the manufacturer WATTX. Overall, a total of 200 buildings will be engaged in the Swiss large-scale pilot, covering a mix of typologies: 80% residential, 5% commercial, 15% public (mix of new and old buildings).
